Suspect charged in violent home invasion near Barry’s Bay

Madawaska Valley residents in Barry’s Bay noted a number of Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers and vehicles, both marked and unmarked, on Bay Street throughout the day on March 26th. The Current subsequently learned that the police activity was related to the execution of a search warrant but the OPP was unable to release further information until this afternoon when a  news release from OPP Killaloe Detachment provided the following details.

The Killaloe Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and OPP Renfrew County Crime Unit have arrested and charged a suspect in connection with a violent robbery near Barry’s Bay.

Officers were called to a home in Madawaska Valley Township February 15, 2020. Shortly after 3:30 a.m. two masked individuals had entered the home through an unlocked door. The male and female residents of the home were assaulted and restrained. The robbers left with a quantity of cash, cannabis products and beer.

Officers from the Killaloe and Lennox & Addington Detachments, OPP Emergency Response Team executed search warrants March 26, 2020 at residences in Barry’s Bay and the Village of Enterprise.

As a result of the investigation, Shannon Bernard FINUCANE, age 41 of Stone Mills Township, Ontario has been charged with:

  • Assault with a Weapon – sec. 267(a)
  • Forcible Confinement -sec. 279(2)
  • Flight from Peace Officer – sec. Theft of Motor Vehicle – sec. 333.1
  • Robbery Using Firearm – sec. 344(1)(a.1)
  • Break and Enter With Intent to Commit and Indictable Offence – sec. 348(1)(a)
  • Disguise with Intent – sec. 351(2)
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5000 – sec. 354(1)(a)
  • Fraud Under $5000 – sec. 380(1)(b) – two counts
  • Fail to Comply with a Probation Order – sec. 733.1(1)
  • Use of a Firearm While Committing Offence – sec. 85(1)(a)
  • Possession of a Weapon for Dangerous Purpose – sec. 88
  • Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm – sec. 91(1)

The accused remains in custody and is scheduled to appear for a bail hearing by video before the Ontario Court of Justice in Pembroke on April 9, 2020.

The investigation is ongoing.
