Bonnechere Valley man charged with first degree murder

The Killaloe Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), with assistance from East Region OPP Criminal Operations and Forensic Identification Services, has now charged an individual in connection with a murder investigation at the Algonquins of Pikwàkanagàn First Nation.

On July 10, 2021 shortly before 3:00 a.m. the OPP responded to a 911 call at a residence on a road north of Kokomis Inamo. Officers located a deceased 67 year old male in the area and a second male with non-life threatening injuries. The injured male was transported to hospital by the Renfrew County Ambulance. 

Zachary MARQUARDT, aged 27 from Bonnechere Valley Township, has been arrested and charged under the Criminal Code (CC) with:

  • First degree murder – CC section 235(1)
  • Fail to comply with a Probation Order – CC section 733.1(1)

The accused appeared in court via video link yesterday morning and was remanded into custody with a scheduled appearance date of July 19, 2021 at the Ontario Court of Justice, Killaloe.

The identity of the deceased person is not being released at this time.

The investigation remains ongoing under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) and in partnership with the Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Services.
