Stefan Klietsch of Renfrew had been acclaimed as the Libertarian Party of Canada Candidate for Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke for the second time. He has however changed his affiliation and registered with Elections Canada as an Independent Candidate instead.
“There is no bad blood between the Libertarian party and myself,” Mr. Klietsch stated. “But the party affiliation had become an obstacle in my immediate intended campaign.”
Mr. Klietsch was subject to repeated criticisms on social media that he allegedly was misrepresenting himself as an ideological libertarian for the sake of electoral advantage. Elsewhere, such as when recruiting for elector signatures while knocking on doors, he found the party affiliation to be muddying his messaging.
“I had made clear to the Libertarian Party that I am not an ideological puritan, and the Libertarians gracefully welcomed my affiliation regardless,” Mr. Klietsch explained. “But despite my hand being forced by my need to successfully recruit more elector signatures, I am looking forward to campaigning on my own platform purely on its own merits.”
Mr. Klietsch will continue to remain a member of the Libertarian Party of Canada’s Ethics Committee.
