Seat of Wisdom reports on successful winter fitness event

Seat of Wisdom College distributed the following media release on Feb.15:

Our Lady Seat of Wisdom College had a highly successful second annual Wisdom Winter Workout on February 5. On a beautiful, sunny Saturday, seventy members of our College community – students, staff, faculty, and alumni – participated by walking, running, skiing, or skating 10 kilometres, either individually or in teams of two.

The campaign achieved its goal of soliciting 200 individual sponsors, raising a grand total of $13,034. Above from left: Maria Reilandar, Director of Development, and Katherine Kelly, Stewardship and Development Officer. Photo submitted.

These funds are earmarked to support the mental and spiritual health of our students in a number of ways: supporting our Student Services department, which provides counselling and tutoring to students; establishing a new fund to assist students to access professional counselling; and supporting our upcoming annual Martyrs’ Shrine pilgrimage, during which we encounter the stories and locations of Canada’s martyrs and the place of the first Mass ever held in Ontario.

While raising funds for an important student need, the winter event also aims to encourage physical activity and wellness, building community spirit, and having fun in the midst of Canadian winter. A highlight for many of our participants this year was the opportunity to do it on a 4 km skating trail on a local lake just outside Barry’s Bay. One of our staff members, Stewardship and Development Officer Katherine Kelly, skated 28 km on the trail after committing to skate one kilometer for each person who sponsored her. Another staff member, Karen Hanlon, completed a half-marathon of 21 kilometres by walking.

The College wishes to thank all of our participants and sponsors, and we look forward to another successful event in the winter of 2023.
