Stone Fence Theatre offers youth summer theatre camp

Stone Fence Theatre, a company dedicated to developing original shows that focus on the Ottawa Valley and its people and on showcasing Ottawa Valley artistNs, is holding a theatre camp for young people this summer in Pembroke.

“The purpose of the camp is to keep theatre alive and pass the torch to our community’s youth,” says Chantal Elie-Sernoskie, the company’s Creative Director and the camp’s leader. (Shown above, photo submitted.) “Theatre is an art form that helps with so many aspects of mental health, socializing, confidence, purpose, and students right now need to this more than ever.”

The week-long camp will take place outdoors on August 8th-12th 2022 in Pembroke’s Riverside Park with several different workshops, games and activities throughout the day. Campers will learn skills and work towards a mini-performance on the Friday evening for friends and family.

“I am always amazed at how many talented folks we get on our stage,” says Ms. Elie-Sernoskie, who, in her day-job, is a cultural animator at the French public school in Pembroke. What an amazing thing for youth to be able to attend workshops run by some our company’s great artists. And we hope that getting youth involved with our company now will keep them involved later.”

Campers will learn from people with real life experience on stage and backstage. Dance, acting, singing, and running a theatre company are some of the thing’s campers will learn about.

They will learn and perform excerpts from the musical comedy A Place to Roost, which was written by Stone Fence Theatre Producer Ish Theilheimer in 1977, his first play. IT tells the story of a city chicken who is transplanted to a farm in rural Ontario. Everyone in the play dresses in chicken costume, except the evil weasel, who kills chickens in the night.

A typical day at camp might be:

10-10:15 – snack
