MV Election update – Willmer runs for mayor

Since publication of our article on July 18, one of the incumbent Councillors has withdrawn his nomination and has instead declared himself as a mayoral candidate. Councillor Mark Willmer announced his decision on July 22.

The Current spoke to Willmer on July 25 and asked him what had caused him to change his mind about his candidacy. He responded by saying, “Basically what I’d like to say is that from a personal and political perspective, I just feel the timing is right, right now.” He added, “I have spoken at length with Mayor Love but she will make her own statements very soon and I’m not going to speak for her. And I sort of want to leave it at that for now.”

Willmer was pressed to explain what he meant by his reference to the “political perspective,” but he refused to elaborate, repeating that he had spoken to the Mayor and she will release her own statements. Therefore as matter stand, unless someone steps forward to oppose Willmer, at least one member of the existing Council will remain in office for the next term.
