OPP update – PUBLIC SAFETY WARNING – animal remains at large

On October 25, 2023, the Killaloe Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) released a public safety warning after learning an African Serval Cat had escaped from a local sanctuary on Corrigan Road in Bonnechere Valley Township.

Police received a request for assistance from the Provincial Animal Welfare Service (PAWS) to attend the sanctuary and it was learned the cat had escaped.

The OPP has learned the animal has the ability to attack mid-sized livestock and pets.

As of the morning of this report the animal has not been captured. Should the animal remain at large it is suspected the cat will not survive as it does not have the ability to survive the colder months ahead.

The cat is described as approximately 25 to 30 pounds and has a spotted coat with pointed ears.

Police are asking members of the public to use caution in the area and report any sightings to police. If it is an emergency, please call using 911.

Any questions pertaining to any possible investigations should be directed to the PAWS.
