There’s a new train coming to the Barry’s Bay Railway Station on Labour Day Weekend. Unlike the locomotive-powered trains that arrived here in bygone days, this train won’t be accompanied by steam and cinders. But it should bring lasting excitement and pleasure to today’s youngsters. Saturday, August 31st is the date set for the long-awaited unveiling of a new train-themed play structure in Railway Station Park – an unveiling that is just one part of a celebration marking the 130th anniversary of the Barry’s Bay Railway Station.
To help get everyone in “train mode,” local groups have organized some pre-anniversary events throughout the summer, including the 130th Anniversary Heritage Walk led in July by Theresa Prince. Tuesday, Aug.27 at 10:30am – Story Time in the Park
Madawaska Valley Public Library’s weekly reading for youngsters will feature special guest reader, Shirley Hill. Story Time takes place at Zurakowski Park, but in case of rain, please meet at the Library.
Thursday, Aug.29 at 7pm – Sudden Impact
Opeongo Seniors and Madawaska Valley Public Library collaborate to host a free evening presentation at the Opeongo Seniors Centre by Jamie Bramburger about his book, Sudden Impact – The Almonte Train Wreck of 1942. Bramburger will outline the effect of the disaster on the Ottawa Valley. Following the presentation, there will be copies of his book available to purchase ($30) cash or by e-transfer. Light refreshments will be on offer.
Saturday, Aug.31 from 3pm to 8pm – Train Day
Train Day offers a variety of free, family-friendly activities taking place at Railway Station Park / Water Tower Park in Barry’s Bay starting at 3pm on Saturday. The celebrations include:
- Unveiling of the train replica play structure
- Face painting
- Bouncy castle
- Live entertainment
- 4pm street dance “Choo-Choo Chaboogie” in Opeongo Square
- Train snacks at Sooo Hungry
- 4:30pm to 5:30pm Best-selling author, Carley Fortune, will be signing books at the Madawaska Valley Public Library booth in Station Park.
- Licensed patio and pie-eating contest at the Balmoral Hotel
Note: Saturday’s events will be re-located to the Paul J. Yakabuski Community Centre if it rains.
