Spaces still left for today’s OV-CAOS workshops in Quadeville and Whitney

Ottawa Valley Community Arts invites creative people ages 10 and up to attend this afternoon’s FREE workshops:

Intergenerational Open Studio with Linda Archibald on October 19 from 1-4 pm at the Quadeville Community Centre. Participants will be able to explore various materials and create freely. This is a FREE workshop for all ages. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult. All materials are provided.

Art and Plants: with Christine Luckasavitch and Megan Spencer. This outdoor workshop explores plant and human relationships, and it takes place at Camp Bongopix, 50 Galeairy Lake Road, Whitney from1pm-4pm. (Rain or Shine). No experience necessary, all materials are provided and gas cards are available.

Attention Valley gardeners:

Good Food Guild

The Good Food Guild invites anyone interested to their second Work Bee on Monday, Oct.21 starting at 1pm. The first work bee went well and the plants are growing at Killaloe Pathways Park (the former Hoch Farm), at the big barn on Hwy.60 between Killaloe OPP and the flashing yellow light to Killaloe. You are also welcome to just come for a look at the work so far.

What is Green Burial?

The Eganville and Area Horticultural Society is hosting a presentation by the Board of Directors of Green Burial Ottawa Valley on Monday, Oct 21 at the Royal Canadian Legion, Veterans Way in Eganville. You can ask questions and learn about this new concept. Everyone is welcome to attend. A social time with refreshments starts at 7pm and the meeting will begin at 7:30pm. Suggested small donation for non-members.

Madawaska Valley Gardening Club

The next monthly meeting takes place on Thursday, Oct.24 at the Opeongo Seniors Centre, 19 Stafford Street, Barry’s Bay. MV native Virginia deCarle will speak on Forest Ecology. Following graduation from the Algonquin College Forestry Technician program, this award-winning forest educator for Forestry Ontario has worked for 14 years in the forestry industry as a Tree Marker and volunteered with various organizations. The meeting begins at 7:30pm (arrive at 7pm for a social time and Seed Exchange). The $10 annual membership fee includes all monthly meetings. For information please visit mvgardeningclub.ca

Pembroke Symphony Orchestra season opener

The Pembroke Symphony Orchestra opens their 2024-25 season with the first of four concert performances on Saturday Oct.26 at 7pm at Festival Hall in Pembroke. Under the direction of guest conductor Emmanuelle Lambert-Lemoine, the orchestra will perform pieces by Mozart and Beethoven, as well as the Haydn Trumpet Concerto featuring guest soloist, Travis Mandel. Tickets: $25 adults, $15 students, FREE for children under 12. Box Office 613-735-2182.


Merit hearing scheduled for MV Container By-law appeal

On Sept.11th The Current reported that a resident of Madawaska Valley Township is challenging the addition of shipping containers in MV’s recently-amended Zoning By-Law at the Ontario Land Tribunal (OLT). The Tribunal will hold a “merit hearing” on Monday, Oct.28 at 10 am.

An OLT spokesperson informed us that “The OLT screens appeals to identify if they were filed in accordance with statutory requirements and can refuse to process an appeal or can dismiss an appeal if it finds that the documents filed to initiate the proceeding did not meet legislative requirements or are not in compliance with the Tribunal’s Rules of Practice and Procedure…. Media and members of the public may observe the proceedings”
