Nothing trivial about Madawaska Valley Public Library

Contestants take Madawaska Valley Public Library’s Trivia Night very seriously indeed, with individuals, family groups, and community organizations entering. Earlier this month sixteen teams of up to six people vied for the coveted trophy at the Paul J. Yakabuski Community Centre. Although Natalie Barrington, CEO of MV Public Library, said the questions at the much-anticipated fundraiser were really challenging this time, the winning team scooped the field by 57 points! Congratulations to the Madawaska Valley Food Bank team. Above from left: Bill Schroeder, Paul Thompson, Judith Schroeder, Mike Whitfield, Patricia Whitfield, Eileen Leslie.

Barrington told The Current that many local businesses donated door prizes for the event and that the Library greatly appreciated all the sponsors:

  • Valley Cap
  • Taylor Family
  • South Algonquin Knits & Notions
  • Bank of Montreal
  • Mad Outdoors
  • Vito’s
  • St. Francis Herb Farm
  • The Madawaska Valley Current
  • Mary and Clifford Blank
  • Hungry Pig Diner
  • Pamela Ogelsby
  • Gift It Gray
  • Lorraine’s Pharmasave
  • Pantry Savings
  • Trends Hair Salon
  • NAAPA
  • Barry’s Bay Valumart for donating all the table snacks

She also expressed thanks to all the volunteers who were essential to the success of Trivia Night. More than $1,300 was raised for Library programming.

More to come

But Trivia Night was not the only excitement at the Library this month. Already there has been a meeting of the Fiero Coding Club, Mothers’ Day take-home craft kits and a Paper Folding craft session on today’s PA Day. Plus – just look at what else is coming up:

Saturday May 17 10am-3pm  The May long weekend means BAY DAY and the Library will hold its Fill-A-Bag Used Book Sale. You can fill a red bag for $10. The used book sale is the library’s largest fundraiser. It’s a win-win: books for lazy summer days, and you can support the Library!

Saturday, May 17th at 11am More Bay Day fun as the Lego Club meets at the Library.

Tuesday May 20   10am-12pm; 12:30pm-2pm Service Canada will be back at the Library to help with Canadian Dental Care Plan applications, Social Insurance Numbers, Old Age Security, Employment Insurance, and Canada Pension Plan.

All month long Enjoy art by MVDS High School students. This group exhibition throughout the Library features work by talented local young people. It’s a taster of what you will experience at the Madawaska Valley District School Arts Night on Thursday, May 22 at the school.

Saturday May 24 at 1:30pm In collaboration with Madawaska Valley Association for Community Living (and being held at MVACL in Barry’s Bay), the Library hosts an Author Talk with Susan Dagenais, whose book ““E is for Maggie” chronicles her personal experiences of living with and loving an autistic child.

Tuesday May 27 at 6pm Another collaboration of MVPL and MVACL, this time at the Royal Canadian Legion Barry’s Bay Branch 406, offers a FREE screening of Out of my Mind, a PG rated teen drama. Proceeds from the Canteen will go to MV District School.

As if all that wasn’t enough, the Library also offers book displays that might interest the budding beekeeper or gardener – as well as the new Seed Library to help you get your garden growing.

And then there are the ongoing monthly activities at the Library:

  • Walking Group, Fridays at 1pm: meet new friends and stay fit!
  • Story Time! Every Wednesday morning at 10:30am
  • FREE take-home Craft Kits and STEM Kits to keep kids busy at home.
