Featured this month at your Public Library

Madawaska Valley Public Library kicks off June with an exciting outer space event this week called Astronomy in Action. This planetarium experience at the Paul J. Yakabuski Community Centre on Friday, June 6 is offered in two shows – a family one at 5pm (Sorry, sold out) and another at 6pm (very few tickets remain). But if you’re too late to catch the “Space for Everyone” show, don’t worry. You can also enjoy special June events and programs developed by MV Public Library. Every year the Library encourages Valley youngsters to develop their reading skills. This year’s summer reading program offers a unique experience. (See image at top) Encourage your kids to participate in the Around the World Book Club; they can pick up a passport and collect stamps for every book they read. The most stamps wins a prize!

Help your kids make Dad feel special. Pick up a free take-home Father’s Day craft kit at the circulation desk in the Library.

Tackle Share

Are you determined to take advantage of the Valley’s pristine lakes and rivers by learning to fish? Take advantage of the Tackle Share program and borrow a rod and tackle box from the Library.

Service Canada pop-up clinic

You can also get assistance from Service Canada in Barry’s Bay at the Library at a “pop-up” clinic on June 24. You can get help with Canadian Dental Care Plan, Social Insurance Number, Old Age Security, Employment Insurance and Canada Pension Plan, and more. The sessions run from 10am-12pm and 12:30pm-2pm. Appointments are limited, so call or email the library to reserve your spot today! 613-756-2000 or programs@madawaskavalleylibrary.ca

Artist of the month – Liam Gansterer

MV Public Library’s Artist of the Month during June is Valley native, Liam Gansterer. Enjoy his pen and ink drawings on display around the Library. Gansterer exhibited his artwork at the Art Gallery of Bancroft in April. He and his partner, Victoria Lutz, are co-owners of Bayberry Design, and they work out of Northernwood Studio, a multi-disciplinary art and craft design enterprise located at the family farm near Combermere. Don’t forget to visit them on the Madawaska Valley Studio Tour this summer and fall.

Author Talk – Adelle Purdham

Join MV seasonal resident, Adelle Purdham, for an Author Talk at 1:30pm on Saturday, June 14 at the Royal Canadian Legion Barrys Bay Branch 406, 250 John Street, as she discusses her recently-published book “I don’t do disability and other lies I’ve told myself.” In a series of essays, Purdham explores motherhood, disability and worth as she recounts her life experiences after the birth of her daughter with Down syndrome. Exhibiting and examining a wide range of emotions, she forces herself – and us – to consider existence in a society where disability is largely invisible.

For readers in your family from MV Public Library

Planning your “staycation” summer holidays in Canada? The Library has some new guide books (see above) to help you.

Of course, you’ll want some fiction to read on your holiday – maybe you’ll choose one of the new titles shown above.

Every month at MV Public Library

Why not take advantage of the many ongoing monthly activities at the Library:

  • If you have young children, they will enjoy Story Time! every Wednesday morning at 10:30am.
  • If your kids are old enough to be “bored,” why not keep them busy with a FREE craft kit or STEM kit from the Library.
  • Want to get fit and meet new people? Join the adult Walking Group that meets at the Library every Friday at 1:00pm.
  • Challenge the creators in your household with the June meeting of the Lego Club on Saturday June 21 at 11:00am.
  • Trying to develop your “green fingers” in the garden? Take advantage of MV Public Library’s new Seed Library. You can “borrow” seeds now, enjoy fresh produce, and once the season has ended you can donate some of your saved seeds back to the Seed Library.
