John Casimir Hildebrandt died peacefully at Barry’s Bay on September 13, 2025, surrounded by family. The official obituary describes his character and achievements during his 87 years, emphasizing his chief priorities of family, community, and service. John’s love of life, music, laughter and outdoor pursuits are also described, and there is more than a hint of that irrepressible twinkle in his eyes.
Whether as an elected official, board member, business leader or community volunteer, John’s booming voice could be heard encouraging others to take pride in themselves, their work, and their hometown. He had a remarkable talent for spotting opportunities that would promote the Madawaska Valley and improve the services to its residents, including local healthcare. John had strong views and fearlessly expressed them, using his sense of humour and innate charm to inspire others to work with him.
I remember John’s father, Charlie, who built my parents’ Greenan Lake home. My first recollection of John was as part of his father’s crew on the build that summer. The Hildebrandt family cottage was located a short paddle away at the narrows between Lepine and Trout Lakes. But I didn’t really get to know John until Roger and I moved to Barry’s Bay and started The Current.
John and Beth welcomed us graciously, and John in particular was very supportive of our efforts to give Valley residents an alternative news source that wasn’t afraid to rattle cages if necessary. He wrote several well-received articles for The Current and frequently called us with comments and suggestions. He kindly introduced us to various sources when we were researching stories, and we found that his name guaranteed doors were opened for us.
As someone who served several terms as mayor in the municipality, John was outraged by any hint of misbehaviour that could negatively affect the Township and its residents. For example, he was particularly offended by Council and the Township’s spiteful vendetta against The Current which resulted in our having to take legal proceedings to expose it and stop it continuing. He was also appalled at the extent to which the Township’s insurer exposed MV ratepayers to increased insurance costs in financing a meritless defence to the tune of approximately $600,000. Writing as a former mayor, he made his views clear in a letter to the insurer to which it never responded.
Sincere condolences to Beth and family from all here at The Current. It was a privilege to have known John Hildebrandt and our community is poorer for his loss.
Rest in peace, Johnnie.
