Madawaska Valley Public Library has pulled out all the stops to offer Valley residents multiple ways to enjoy the month of May. In addition to all the usual monthly activities (scroll down for the list), there are some really special events for Library patrons of all ages.
Have you assembled your trivia team yet? Before you know it, May 29th will be here and the questions will start at the Library’s Trivia Night in the lounge at the Paul J. Yakabuski Community Centre. Your entry fee of $75 not only supports MV Library, but provides each team (of up to six members) with an evening of good-natured, competitive fun. Snacks and drinks from the canteen will be available, plus it’s a learning experience! No one need feel left out, as MV Library will find a team for any individuals who want to enter. Proceeds from this Trivia Night will go towards the purchase of four new computers for public use at the Library – the fund is currently $1,500 short. Register by email to programs@madawaskavalleylibrary.ca or call 613-756-2000.
Service Canada returns to the Library on Tuesday May 5 from 10am to 2pm. This pop-up session provides assistance with a wide range of government services, such as Canada Pension Plan, Old Age Security, Canadian Dental Care Plan, Canada Disability Benefit, Social Insurance Number. Information about Service Canada’s programs, services and benefits is available online at canada.ca or by calling 1-800-O-Canada. For an appointment, please call the Library at 613-756-2000.
An Author Talk by Sean Conway offers a trip down memory lane for Valley residents, especially hockey fans and past students at Madawaska Valley District High School, when he discusses his recently published book, HOME ICE: MVDHS Wolves 1967-1972. There will be copies of the book available for purchase ($20) at the event, which takes place on Tuesday May 5 at 1pm at Opeongo Seniors Centre, 19 Stafford Street, Barry’s Bay. Proceeds support MV Library.
Help your kids get ready for Mother’s Day by picking up a take home craft kit from the Library circulation desk.
You can meet May’s Artists of the Month, Karen Hanlon and Katie Baklinski, at the Library when they give an Artists’ Talk on Saturday, May 9 at 1pm. It’s your chance to learn more about the creative process and may help you to enjoy their work on display whenever you visit the Library this month.
Register school age children for a PA Day Crafternoon on Friday, May 15 starting at 1:30pm. Be sure to arrange a place in advance as space is limited. Register by email to programs@madawaskavalleylibrary.ca or by phone to 613-756-2000.
MV Public Library gets into the Bay Day spirit on Saturday, May 19 when Sean Conway will be at the Library to autograph copies of his book HOME ICE. As well as buying Conway’s book, you can also take advantage of the Library’s popular Fill A Bag Sale as the Used Book room is a steady and much-loved fundraiser for MVPL.
Prepare for the gardening season by borrowing some great books on the topic, or visit the Used Book Room where Library volunteers have assembled a display of useful used books for gardeners. Remember that MV Library also has a Seed Library!
