Important dates during the countdown to this year’s Municipal Election

  • Tuesday, October 6, 2026: YES it’s tonight! All Candidates Meeting at the Royal Canadian Legion Barry’s Bay Branch 406 starting at 7pm. This is your chance to see and hear what the candidates in Madawaska Valley have to offer. Sean Conway will moderate this event, hosted by Madawaska Valley Public Library. Can’t go?   • Friday, October 16, 2026: Online Voting period begins
  • Saturday, October 17, 2026: Advance Poll – Combermere Community Centre. In person voting will take place from 10am to 8pm at the Combermere Community Centre.
  • Wednesday, October 21, 2026: Advance Poll – Municipal Office. In person voting will take place from 10am to 8pm at the Municipal Office, 85 Bay Street in Barry’s Bay.
  • Friday, October 23, 2026: Close of Third Party Advertiser Registration Period. Last day to register as a third party advertiser.
  • Monday, October 26, 2026: Voting Day
    Voting will continue to take place electronically or in person from 10am-8pm at the Municipal Office. Voting closes at 8:00pm. The Clerk will declare the results of the election and provide information to the public on the website. 

October is Canadian Libraries Month

MV Public Library welcomes new members. During October all Library patrons and visitors can enter a draw to win a gift card. Did you know that Library membership includes free access to Kanopy where, along with movies, series and documentaries, you can stream “The Librarians” a documentary film that graphically describes the value of public libraries. Check back with The Current for details of more Library events this month.

PA Day at Madawaska Valley Public Library

This PA Day MV Public Library offers a kids’ program all about Space starting at 1:30pm. The afternoon includes fun facts, games, a Scavenger Hunt, and more. Space is limited so remember to register your child for a place by phone 613-745-2000 or by email programs@madawaskavalleylibrary.ca

GAME ON! Youth programming

Community Resource Centre (CRC) brings GAME ON! to George Vanier School in Combermere on Wednesday, October 14 from 3:45pm to 6:30pm. For more information contact CRC by phone 613-757-3108 or email youth@crc-renfrewcounty.com

Madawaska Valley Gardening Club – Tree pruning

Thursday, October 15 at Opeongo Seniors Centre, Stafford Street, Barry’s Bay. This month’s meeting begins at 7:30pm but you are invited from 7pm for a social time and Seed Exchange. There will be a panel discussion on tree pruning with guests Robbie Anderman, Ethan Anderman, & Rhett Gustafson. The three experts bring diverse experience to the topic. As a local author and cofounder of Morninglory Farm, Robbie provides a unique perspective on trees and their connection to the broader world. His son Ethan is well-known for his expertise in planting and maintaining fruit trees locally and will share his knowledge on how pruning can help improve the yield of a fruit tree over time. Rhett from Rockingham Tree Service is an ISA Certified Arborist whose work includes the maintenance and removal of dangerous trees. The panelists will offer a wide range of insights into trees and how to support their health through pruning.
