Criminal charges against local priest withdrawn

The Current has today received confirmation from the Ontario Court of Justice at Pembroke that all criminal charges against Fr. Christopher Shalla, formerly of St. Hedwig Parish, Barry’s Bay, have been withdrawn at the request of the Crown. On June 28, 2022 we reported that Killaloe OPP had laid multiple criminal charges relating to fraud and theft offences that occurred during his tenure at St. Hedwig. Click HERE to read.

A reader recently requested an update on our story, possibly having been prompted by a note in the St. Hedwig Parish Blog dated August 10 2023 that said the Diocese of Pembroke advised that all charges had been withdrawn against Fr. Shalla. The parish item went on to say “The Diocese is grateful for all who have openly and patiently cooperated in these legal proceedings. As has been the case since these matters were raised, Father Shalla remains a priest in good standing.”

No reason was given by the Court for the withdrawal of charges other than it was done at the request of the Crown.
